How to use Chat GPT to prepare for IELTS Academic Writing Task 1?

IELTS preparation
In IELTS Task 1, you are required to summarise and explain the data presented in various formats. A week ago, I spent an hour exploring how to prompt GPT in order to help my students understand the task, learn, and even produce training materials. Here is what I have discovered:

1. You can use GPT to explain the task requirements

Before diving into practice, it's crucial to understand what IELTS Writing Task 1 entails. ChatGPT can provide clear and simple explanations of the task, including the types of charts and graphs typically presented, the expected structure of your response, and the key elements to include in your report. You can ask follow-up questions to get more clarifications.

2. You can generate practice materials.

One of the unique features of ChatGPT-4 is its ability to create images, including the charts and graphs that are central to Task 1. You can prompt ChatGPT to generate a variety of sample visuals, like line graphs, bar charts, and pie charts, complete with fictional data. This allows for more practice opportunities with a wide range of data sets. To get the best results, your prompt should look similar to this: "Create the chart titled: Average monthly temperature in the city X over the period of 1 year."

3. You can ask GPT to draft a model response for you.

Once you have a chart or graph, the next step is to write a summarising response. Here, ChatGPT can serve as a virtual tutor. You can ask it to provide several ideas for your writing or draft an outline.

4. You can learn from examples.

ChatGPT can also generate sample responses to given charts or graphs. By analysing these responses, you can learn how to structure your answer effectively, use appropriate vocabulary, and ensure that your summary is clear and concise.

5. Personalized Feedback and Improvement

Perhaps the most significant advantage of using ChatGPT is the ability to receive personalized feedback. After writing your response, you can ask ChatGPT to critique it. This feedback can focus on specific areas like vocabulary range, grammatical accuracy, or adherence to the task requirements.
You can draft your response and then ask ChatGPT to provide feedback on grammar, vocabulary, coherence, and the overall effectiveness of your summary. Unfortunately, GPT still makes mistakes and is not always accurate when you ask it more general questions, but it does do a pretty good job in specific tasks, like listing the mistakes that it finds in your grammar, spelling, and word use, and providing explanations and references to why it is considered a mistake.

Tips for Effective Practice

Active Engagement: After reviewing sample responses from ChatGPT, rewrite them in your own words to reinforce learning. Make lists of useful words and expressions. You may choose to create a Quizlet set dedicated to this.

Combine Resources: While ChatGPT is a powerful tool, combining its use with other learning resources and real IELTS materials is essential for the full preparation experience. Check out my post about IELTS books and Youtube channels.

Preparing for IELTS Writing Task 1 can be daunting, but with ChatGPT, it becomes more interactive and, hopefully, more effective. Although the chat still has multiple limitations, if we learn to utilise its strong
